Ren, Timothy & Virginia Ferguson

The story of the Ren Ferguson Co. is a narrative of obsession, craftsmanship, and the lifelong pursuit of the perfect tone. From a high school shop class project to the helm of the world’s most iconic guitar brands, Ren Ferguson has defined the modern era of acoustic excellence.

Ren Ferguson | Master Luthier & Founder
Ren’s journey began with a single banjo built for his brother, Robin. That high school shop project sparked a realization that would define his career: the inseparable link between fine craftsmanship and superior sound. After honing his skills in Los Angeles as a repairman and salesman, followed by a few years of service in the South Pacific, Ren returned to California to establish Ferguson Guitars.

His reputation eventually led him to the mountains of Montana. There, he was recruited by Gibson Guitar to oversee the design and management of their new acoustic factory in Bozeman. As the head of the Custom Acoustic Division, Ren earned global recognition as one of the world’s preeminent Master Luthiers.

Following a legendary tenure at Gibson, Ren’s expertise was sought by Fender and later the Cordoba Music Group (Guild), where he served as VP of R&D and Manufacturing. In 2019, Ren returned to his roots, resurrecting the Ferguson name to create the Ren Ferguson Co. Today, Ren works hands-on in the shop, personally ensuring every instrument meets his exacting standards while collaborating directly with every customer.

Timothy Ferguson | Luthier & Production Specialist
For Timothy, the turning point came at the 2002 NAMM show. Witnessing the profound impact his father had made on the music industry, Timothy felt a deep calling to help preserve and continue that legacy.

With a background as an inlay subcontractor for Gibson Acoustics and a key contributor to the layout of the Guild production line, Timothy brings a wealth of technical precision to the bench. Since 2019, he has worked alongside Ren in Montana, managing all aspects of the guitar-making process and helping evolve the Ferguson brand into its modern form.

Virginia Ferguson | Luthier & Business Manager
Virginia’s apprenticeship began in childhood, shadowed by her father’s creative brilliance. Years of attending business dinners and international trade trips provided her with a unique perspective on the industry and a desire to join the family trade.

Joining the team full-time in May 2023, Virginia bridges the gap between the workshop and the front office. Whether she is working hands-on in the shop with Ren and Timothy or managing the daily operations of the company, her involvement ensures the Ferguson legacy remains a family-driven endeavor.
