University of Wyoming Partnership Spurs Hands-On Creativity and Growth

The University of Wyoming’s dynamic partnership is forging new paths for students—and it’s only gaining momentum! Since the collaboration began in February 2024, students have been diving headfirst into the vibrant world of Western Functional Art, learning the time-honored crafts of silversmithing, leatherwork, metalsmithing, and design.

Students have had the incredible opportunity to work side-by-side with master artisans both on the UW campus in Laramie and, more recently, during an exciting trip to Cody, Wyoming. In Cody, students rolled up their sleeves for immersive, hands-on classes in metalsmithing led by renowned craftsman Steve Fontanini from Dubois, and explored Western design concepts with expert artisan Scott Armstrong from Powell.

Each student had the chance to hone their skills in both disciplines, experiencing personalized instruction tailored to their individual levels of expertise. For many, it was their first exposure to the rich, rugged beauty of Western design—a truly eye-opening and inspiring journey.

The artisans’ passion and dedication shone through, as they mentored students, nurturing their creativity and helping them bring bold ideas to life. With opportunities like these, the University of Wyoming continues to ignite excitement, expand horizons, and foster the next generation of artists rooted in the spirit of the West.
