Mind the Gap with Dan Rieple

Sept 9-11, 10am-12pm:
In this 3 day course students will create an 8 x 10 vanity mirror, which can also hang on a wall, using unconventional methods to join the mitered corners.  Rather than the usual tight glue line of a miter, the mirror frame will have as much as a 1/2” gap and be joined using either contrasting wood dowels (which students will make) or contrasting wood splines which the students will make.  Optionally, students can texture the frame surface or just sand it smooth. In the course students will have hands on experience using:
A power miter box (chop saw) to cut frame “chops” to length.
A router with a straight bit and a jig/fixture to guide the cut.
A  dowel cutter
A micro pin nailer
Glue and clamps
An angle grinder equipped with a power carving head for texturing if desired.
A random orbital sander
A hand held flap wheel sander
A band saw
An edge sander
A drill press
10 hand sanding devices (fingers) or fewer depending on history
A spray gun
possibly a glass cutter
